Over the Hill is an off-road exploration game developed by Funselektor, based in Vancouver, and Strelka Games, based in Trento, Italy. You drive vintage 4x4s inspired by the 1960s to the 1980s through hand-crafted areas of forest, lakeside, mountain and desert terrain. The Steam page is explicit that it is a driving game, not a racing game: the goal is to find your own route, not to beat a timer.
Each area is roughly 4 km by 4 km. You complete objectives and reach checkpoints to unlock new vehicles, upgrades and cosmetics, and portals carry you to new areas without a trip back to the main menu. The launch version features several areas across two regions, Canada and Algeria, and the official FAQ says six areas are in development.
The trail is meant to push back. Planks bridge gaps, winches recover stuck vehicles and a limited supply of repair kits fixes damage, while dynamic weather, a day and night cycle and tyre condition change how much grip you have. Between drives you can set up camp, use photo mode and photograph animals to fill a wildlife journal.
You can play alone or with up to three friends online, and Funselektor has confirmed cross-play for when the console versions arrive. There is no local split-screen co-op and no racing-wheel support planned for launch; the game is built around gamepad and keyboard play.
