Hand-crafted areas inside regions, not one open world
Over the Hill is not one huge open world. The official FAQ describes area-based maps: the game is split into regions, each region contains several areas, and each area is hand-crafted and about 4 km by 4 km. You can travel between areas without going back to the main menu.
At launch on October 14, 2026, the game features several areas in two regions, Canada and Algeria. The FAQ says six areas are in the works, with more if possible. The June 2026 Steam Next Fest demo took place in a single area called Emerald Lake.

Regions and areas at launch
Funselektor’s release date announcement says the full game launches with several areas in the Canada and Algeria regions, and that each new area packs more content and surprises than the demo did. The FAQ adds that six areas are in development and that the team would like more if possible.
Funselektor has not published the name of every area or how many belong to each region, so treat any area list circulating before launch as unconfirmed.

How big each area is
Each area is about 4 km by 4 km. At the pace this game encourages, that is plenty of ground, because much of it is trails, slopes and water crossings rather than roads. The Steam page describes biomes inspired by real-world locations, from valleys to mountains, with forests and lakesides to explore.
Moving between areas with portals
Portals are how you reach new areas. The official website describes discovering portals to travel to new areas, and the FAQ confirms that moving between areas does not require a trip to the main menu. Because co-op progress is individual and carries over, a group can keep one session going across several areas.

The Algeria region
Algeria is the second launch region. Funselektor has shown it in an “Algeria map reveal trailer” on the Steam page and a “Welcome to Algeria” trailer in the press kit, and its August progress update said work on the region had made great progress. Official screenshots include sandy tracks, palm trees, red rock cliffs and ruined walls, which fit a desert region, but the screenshots are not labelled, so this guide does not assign specific images to Algeria.

What the demo area tells you
The Steam Next Fest demo in June 2026 was set in Emerald Lake. Funselektor thanked players for joining the journey through Emerald Lake and said the full game’s areas contain more than the demo. The demo closed on June 29, 2026, and the team plans for demo save files to be compatible with the full game, without a full guarantee yet.
What you will find in an area
The Steam page lists remote cabins, scenic viewpoints, natural landmarks, meteorites that have fallen from the sky and portals to new areas. Dynamic weather and a day and night cycle change the conditions of a route, and the FAQ names sunny, rainy and snowy weather. The press kit adds hidden gems among the things worth searching for.
Questions players also ask
Is Over the Hill open world?
Not in the single-map sense. It uses separate hand-crafted areas grouped into regions, and you can move between them without returning to the main menu.
Are the maps procedurally generated?
No. The FAQ says the maps are hand-crafted.
Will more regions come after launch?
Funselektor has not announced post-launch regions. The FAQ only says it would like more than six areas if possible.
