Over the Hill Multiplayer: Co-op, Player Count and Cross-Play

Over the Hill multiplayer explained: online co-op for up to four players, shared solo progress, checkpoint rules, cross-play plans and no split-screen.

Direct answer

Up to four players online, with cross-play confirmed

Over the Hill supports online co-op for up to four players in total: you plus three friends. You can play every area alone or together, and the progress you make carries between single player and multiplayer. Funselektor has also answered the cross-play question with a plain “Yes” in its official FAQ.

Two limits matter before you plan a session. There is no local split-screen co-op, and while friends can help each other reach an objective, every player has to reach a checkpoint personally to complete it.

How many people can play together

The official website says you can collaborate with up to three friends, and the FAQ confirms multiplayer supports up to four players in total. The store listings agree: every official source puts the ceiling at four, and none mentions larger lobbies.

How co-op progress works

The FAQ describes individual progress. When your group heads for an objective, you can help each other with winches, repair kits and route-finding, but each player must reach the checkpoint to complete it. Unlocks stay personal, so nobody finishes an area just because a friend did the driving.

Progress and completed objectives are saved and transferred between single player and multiplayer. You can scout an area alone, join friends later and keep everything you earned.

  • Help is allowed: pull a stuck friend free or fix their car with one of your repair kits.
  • Completion is personal: drive to the checkpoint yourself.
  • Unlocks follow you between solo and co-op sessions.

Cross-play between PC and consoles

Funselektor’s FAQ answers “Will there be cross-play?” with “Yes”, and the Microsoft Store listing includes the Xbox cross-platform co-op feature. Because only the Steam version launches on October 14, 2026, cross-play becomes relevant when the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 versions arrive in 2027.

Funselektor has not explained how friends will find each other across platforms, for example whether an account link is needed. The team says it updates the FAQ as details are confirmed.

Servers, regions and voice chat

During the June 2026 demo, a hotfix added a ping readout for every server region, both in the region dropdown and when creating a server, and fixed a server browser that could get stuck on “Connecting to lobby”. The demo therefore used a server browser with selectable regions; the full game’s setup has not been described in more detail.

No built-in voice chat has been announced. The FAQ says Funselektor is looking at non-proximity voice chat because radio-style chat suits the game, so plan on a separate party chat for now.

Couch co-op is off the table for now

The FAQ acknowledges the appeal of local co-op but says implementing it is not feasible at the moment. Every player therefore joins from their own device over the internet, and Steam’s minimum requirements list a broadband connection.

Questions players also ask

Is Over the Hill cross-platform?

Yes, according to the official FAQ. It starts to matter in 2027, when the console versions join the Steam release.

Can two people play on one screen?

No. The FAQ says local co-op is not feasible at the moment.

Does everyone have to reach the objective?

Yes. Friends can help, but progress is individual, so each player must reach the checkpoint to complete it.

Is there in-game voice chat?

Not confirmed. Funselektor is looking into non-proximity, radio-style voice chat.
